STIMULATE TESTOSTERONE SYNTHESIS
Almost all testosterone is synthesized in the testis/testes. Let’s use a car as an anaolgy. AROMATASE This enzyme is responsible for converting testosterone into estrogen. - To my observation, the most common aromatase inhibitor used in testosterone boosters is Diindolylmethane (DIM). True enough, DIM’s popularity does come with potential. However, research on its effects on us men have yet to catch up to the large pool of evidence it has on post-menopausal women.
- Another notable aromatase inhibitor is Luteolin. Despite not being as widely used as DIM, I personally think it holds more promise. In truth though, there still isn’t much solid research done on Luteolin but with what it currently has, it already looks quite effective.
This diagram shows aromatase “neutralizing” testosterone and converting it into estradiol. Some testosterone boosters work by blocking this conversion, helping to sustain testosterone in the bloodstream so it is active for a longer time. 5-ALPHA-REDUCTASE If aromatase converts testosterone into THE feminine hormone (estrogen), 5-alpha-reductase converts testosterone into another androgen known as dihydrotestosterone or simply DHT. What these companies aren’t telling you though, is that DHT is actually a more potent androgen than testosterone virtually everywhere else except skeletal muscle. As such, in most cases (younger men), mismanagement of DHT may often result in a net loss of androgens despite potentially growing more muscular. DISARM SHBG Basically, your total testosterone is composed of 3 categories:
- “Free” Testosterone – 0.5% to 3.0%
- Albumin-bound Testosterone – 54 to 68%
- SHBG-bound Testosterone – 30 to 40%
Although SHBG binds a lower percentage of testosterone compared to Albumin, it also has a very tight bond on testosterone, which essentially offsets its activity. Albumin on the other hand, has an resemblance to test that’s several times weaker than SHBG, allowing for its bound hormones to enable it to interact with androgen receptors and target tissues. Clinically, it’s believed that only bioavailable testosterone (“free” + Albumin-bound testosterone) can engage in the biological activities of test i.e., higher libido, bulkier build, etc.. Essentially, by reducing the number of SHGB, or by limiting its binding activity, we also increase the number of bioavailable T so that they can do their manly duties. - Stinging Nettle – This plant contains lignans that have a strong affinity to SHBG. These lignans bind to SHBG in place of testosterone for more “free” T.
- Tongkat Ali – Aside from boosting testosterone via increased LH release, this herb also seems capable of reducing levels of SHBG.
